Izanami in Yomi - Gouache, Pencil on mounted watercolor
Izanami is a Shinto goddess of both creation and death.
She is standing in a field of higanbana, red death lilies, also known as the flowers of the afterlife.
They have been described as flowers that grow in Hell, and guide the dead into the next reincarnation.
Ohigan is the autumn equinox where Japanese go to see the graves of their loved ones, these flowers bloom during this time.
Higan means “the far shore” such as in the afterlife.
Yomi means realm of the dead.

The Greek word “abussos” is found only a handful of times in the New Testament, It means “bottomless pit, abyss”

Specifically, in the book of Revelation. This is where John describes the end times when angels sound seven trumpets.
Each trumpet signals the coming of a new judgment on the people of earth.
When the fifth angel blows his trumpet, Abussos, will open, and a horde of demonic “locusts” will rise out.
These creatures will be given the power to torture any person who does not bear God’s seal.
Abaddon / Apollyon is the ruler of the Abyss and the king of these demonic locusts.

And so, this is one take on the End of Days.

How to explain the symbolism in this piece? Well, overall, I leave much of it to you.
I would like to explain a few things.
.
THE SWORDS: There are seven swords atop her head, normally going into her heart. I chose these to sit as her crown. Her pain is her strength and a reminder to us all of our own life as well as hers.
.
THE WINGS: There are seven wings, one for each archangel. They are always looking over her and all of us.
.
THE ARMS: There are Seven, one arm for each sorrow. It's a representation that she is able to handle everything with grace, strength, faith and beauty. She is holding her sorrowful heart. And you can also see, there is a Hand of Benediction, as well.
